The Toronto Maple Leafs officially placed the former top-10 pick Alex Nylander and a veteran defenseman on NHL waivers.
In today's waiver update, the insider Elliotte Friedman revealed that the Toronto Maple Leafs General Manager Brad Treliving decided to send two players to the Marlies in the AHL.
Friedman announced that Alex Nylander (
William Nylander's brother) and
Dakota Mermis are both available for free to all NHL teams with a post on X, in which he also stated that the San Jose Sharks placed
Valtteri Pulli on waivers.
Each of them will need to clear waivers before joining the AHL, and it wouldn't be surprising to see a team taking a chance at either one of these players.
Nylander's case is especially surprising, considering the hype surrounding William Nylander's brother adding offensive depth to the bottom six.
However, he didn't add his name to the scoresheet in the five games he took part in this season with the Leafs, after scoring eight goals in 14 games with the Marlies earlier in the year.
It seems he'll need to wait before having another shot in the NHL.
As for Mermis, he underwent surgery back in September, which forced him to miss the start of the regular season. He was assigned to a conditioning stint in the AHL two weeks ago, indicating a return.
Last season, the defenseman scored eight points in 47 games with the Minnesota Wild.
Since going back to the AHL, he scored one assist in three games and has a +2 rating.
An update on NLH waivers will be made tomorrow at 2 PM E.T. Stay tuned for all the latest developments.
