Ryan Reaves Defends Mitch Marner Controversy: 'I Was Just Being Honest'
Mitch Marner's Toronto departure caused plenty of drama, and now Ryan Reaves has opened up on his role in the situation that ultimately saw him traded from the team.
The Toronto Maple Leafs traded Mitch Marner as a part of a sign-and-trade this off-season to the Vegas Golden Knights, a moved that caused plenty of controversy, especially for Ryan Reaves after Marner revealed that it was a talk with Reaves and his experience in Vegas that led to his departure from Toronto.
It also resulted in the team trading Reaves, as they moved him to the San Jose Sharks just days after the Marner deal, and now, he's opened up on the entire process, admitting he was ust trying to steer Marner in the right direction.
"Besides the fact that I already knew I was getting shipped off, let's leave that aside. Mitchy was hitting free agency, right? And I think that was pretty public knowledge. I'm very close with Mitchy I became very close with him over the years, the last few years. And he asked me my opinion about Vegas. I played here for four years. I lived here all summer because I love the city. What do you want me to do? You want me to lie to him because I'm still technically signed with Toronto? That's my boy. I'm not going to steer him wrong."
While some fans were excited to see Marner's tenure in Toronto end, others were furious that a player on their team would play a role in him joining the Golden Knights, and those fans couldn't have been more upset with Reaves.
In his interview, Reaves noted that while he was still signed in Toronto, he knew his time with the organization was running out, and as a result, he wanted to do right by his teammate rather than a franchise that was ready to move on from him, and with all the controversy, we've now got several marquee matchups that will be fun to watch in 2025/26.
