One major domino could decide whether Erik Karlsson lands with the Maple Leafs

The rumor mill in Toronto never really slows down, and this time it's spinning around a name that would make any fan base pause: Erik Karlsson.

The idea first came from Elliotte Friedman on Sportsnet's 32 Thoughts podcast, who passed along a source's prediction that the Penguins defenseman could land with the Maple Leafs at some point in the 2026-27 season.

Karlsson has been a name attached to trade chatter since as far back as last season, so this latest wrinkle isn't coming totally out of nowhere.

Adam Proteau dug into the idea for The Hockey News, and his breakdown is worth a read.

He's not convinced the fit works right now, unless Toronto moves a major domino first, and honestly, the logic tracks.

Karlsson is a right-handed defenseman, and Toronto already has that spot more than covered.

Chris Tanev slots in as arguably the team's most important blueliner, and the Leafs just added Darren Raddysh from Tampa Bay this summer too.

Squeezing Karlsson into that mix would mean pushing established players down the lineup, and that's a hard sell for a rental.

Karlsson still has plenty left, he put up 15 goals and 66 points a season ago, but production alone doesn't solve a roster logjam.

According to Proteau, there's really only one path that makes a Karlsson trade realistic, and it runs through Morgan Rielly.

If Chayka can find a new home for Rielly and shed a contract or two along the way, suddenly the cap sheet opens up and the whole conversation changes.

Without that move, adding Karlsson just doesn't add up financially or on the depth chart.

Karlsson is entering the final year of his deal and holds a no-move clause, so he ultimately controls where this goes.

Toronto also has two Swedish icons around the organization now in Mats Sundin and Daniel Alfredsson, which could matter to him.

Still, Proteau isn't holding his breath, and neither should Leafs fans just yet.
