Today, a new report from NHL insider Chris Johnston has suggested that Auston Matthews is not the most highly regarded Maple Leaf by other teams in a trade.

The Toronto Maple Leafs recently hired new GM John Chayka and organization President Mats Sundin to lead the team into a new era of Maple Leafs hockey.
With the new hiring, many have speculated that Chayka and Sundin will look to put their stamp on the team with a big offseason move potentially involving Auston Matthews.
However, a new report from insider Chris Johnston has suggested the Maple Leafs could get a better return for Matthew Knies instead.

Matthew Knies reportedly considered most valuable Maple Leaf by other teams

According to a report from Chris Johnston, the Maple Leafs were offered much better trade packages for Knies than they have for Matthews in the past.
NEWS: Chris Johnston on OverDrive said he heard from a member from one NHL team that they would give up more for Matthew Knies than Auston Matthews
Knies, 23, has steadily improved during his NHL career becoming a breakout young star for the Maple Leafs this season while Matthews struggled on his way to a career worst year.
While this could genuinely mean that teams value Knies more, it could also mean that no teams have come forward with a serious offer for Matthews yet.
Now, it will be up to Chayka and Sundin to determine whether both Knies and Matthews are a key piece of the future or if they could be used to bring in new fresh talent.
As the offseason continues, it will be interesting to see if the offers surrounding Matthews intensify or if the market for the Maple Leafs captain stays relatively low.
