NHL agent's latest rant has many calling it the worst trade in Maple Leafs history

Darren Ferris reopened Mitch Marner's Toronto wounds this week, and it played as arrogance.
The people he was really addressing were never Leafs fans.
On the PuckPedia Hockey Show, Ferris walked through three moves agents rarely pull off. He orchestrated the 2024 Broberg offer sheet out of Edmonton, brokered Marner's sign-and-trade to the Vegas Golden Knights, and just made Bowen Byram the highest-paid defenseman in league history.
Critics heard a man pumping his own tires and dragging the Toronto Maple Leafs through the mud a year after both sides moved on.
“He was never protected by his organization.”

That reading treats the interview as a publicity own-goal. It wasn't.
String the moves together and a method appears. The Broberg offer sheet weaponized Edmonton's cap crunch, Marner's exit turned a walk-year star into $96 million, and Byram converted a weak market into a record.
The audience was never in the stands
Ferris didn't go on a hockey business podcast to win over Leafs fans. He went on to be heard by the next wave of restricted free agents deciding who should represent them.
Every jab at Toronto is a credential in that room. It signals to future clients that he will fight their own team without blinking.
His own stance said it plainly: you are not there to make friends, you are there to win.
A record that resets the moment it's set
The Byram deal, per NHL.com, carries a $12.5 million cap hit and, per Yahoo Sports, tops every defenseman contract ever signed.
That title has a shelf life. Cale Makar and Quinn Hughes are next, and both are expected to blow past it.
Ferris knows the record is temporary, which is exactly why he is claiming it first and loudly, while the number still stands as the benchmark every rival defenseman will now cite.
The Marner drama was never the point. The pitch was.
