Hughes brothers call out Toronto media for treatment of Team USA captain Auston Matthews

Over the past few weeks, Team USA dominated at the 2026 Olympic Games, and while many believed they were outplayed in the Gold Medal Game, they came up victorious in 3-on-3 overtime against Team Canada.

In that time, the team were led by Auston Matthews, who proved that despite being outplayed as a team, he could be the leader this team needed to lead them to their first gold medal in decades, as he posted 3 goals and 7 points in 6 games at the Olympics.

This comes after Matthews has been dealing with constant criticism from the Toronto media about his leadership qualities, and after the game, Quinn and Jack Hughes took the opportunity to call out that media, supporting their superstar captain in the process.

For the most part, those in Toronto have been highly supportive of No. 34, despite him playing for the USA and the natural rival of Canada, but after struggling to lead Toronto to the Eastern Conference Finals, of course there's going to be at least some criticism.

Ultimately, that won't go away completely until he can lead the Leafs on a deep post-season run, but until that point, he's earned his respect after leading Team USA to gold, with his teammates clearly having his back throughout the process.
