Gavin McKenna breaks his silence on a disappointing debut with the Leafs

The first overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft made his preseason debut for the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday night, but the Leafs dropped a 4-1 decision to the Montreal Canadiens at Scotiabank Arena, and the 18-year-old finished without a point.

Still, McKenna was more focused on the moment than the result. Asked about pulling on the sweater alongside the team's biggest names, he said:

The gratitude was genuine, but the game itself did not produce the splash many fans expected. Deployed on the left wing with John Tavares and William Nylander, McKenna registered three shots on goal, finished a minus-1 and did not factor into the scoring.

His most noticeable early moment was a hooking minor, which came within his first few shifts.

He did flash some of the speed and creativity that made him the top prospect in his class.

A rush around the net drew praise from head coach Jim Hiller, and a second-period power play shot from the right circle showed off his quickness.

Yet the goaltender stopped his best looks, and one early chance faded when he hesitated.

Context matters here. Auston Matthews noted that McKenna jumped into a game after only two practices, and Hiller said he simply wanted the teenager to enjoy the night.

Preseason results carry little weight, and nobody expected a top pick to rewrite the record book in his first outing.

Even so, the modest impact underlines how big the adjustment to NHL pace will be. McKenna will get more chances as camp continues to turn promising flashes into production.
