Mitch Marner was the centre of plenty of hate during his time in Toronto, and now a former Leafs enforcer has called out their fans for the way they treated him.

After nine seasons in Toronto, Mitch Marner departed the Maple Leafs this off-season, with the team working on a sign-and-trade that sent him West to the Vegas Golden Knights.
After the departure from his hometown team, Marner gave a heartfelt thank you to many fans in Toronto, with some appreciating what he did for the team during his tenure while others hated on him for deciding to leave.
That hatred was something that he likely got used too during his time in Toronto as the team continued to fail and fall short in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, with former Maple Leafs enforcer Stu Grimson stating that he believes Marner was treated unfairly at points during his stint in Toronto.
I think unfairly Marner caught more than his share of the criticism for this group falling short. He's one piece in a 23-player puzzle that maybe could have given you a little bit more, and I'm focusing, of course, on the postseason.

It's hard to argue with Grimson on this point, but given the passion and the pressure that comes from playing in front of Maple Leafs fans, almost every player on the team receives their fair share of hatred and criticism, whether it's warranted or not.
This likely played a key role in Marner wanting to depart Toronto, as he now plays in the much less pressure packed market of Las Vegas, and while he'll likely get a very rough reaction when he returns to Toronto, hopefully there are plenty of fans out there that appreciate what he did over nine years.
