Erik Karlsson fuels Toronto Maple Leafs speculation with special reunion

The timing has Maple Leafs fans buzzing, since Alfredsson is now entering his first season as an associate coach in Toronto.

The image lands just days after Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman dropped a stunning prediction on the 32 Thoughts podcast.

A source told Friedman that if Karlsson ever hits the trade market, the pitch to Toronto writes itself: Mats Sundin, Daniel Alfredsson, Erik Karlsson, all under one roof at Scotiabank Arena.

Karlsson and Alfredsson spent four seasons together as Senators after Alfredsson selected Karlsson 15th overall in the 2008 draft.

Alfredsson served as a mentor during Karlsson's rookie year, and the two later represented Sweden together at the 2012 World Championship and the 2014 Sochi Olympics.

That bond has remained visible over the years, and the latest reunion photo is only reigniting speculation about where it could lead.

Karlsson is entering the final season of his eight-year, $92 million contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins, carrying an $11.5 million cap hit.

He owns a no-movement clause, so any trade requires his approval. Toronto's front office already features Sundin as senior executive advisor, and Alfredsson's new coaching role adds another familiar face.

Former Leafs GM Kyle Dubas, now in Pittsburgh, previously pursued Karlsson before landing him from San Jose.

None of this confirms a trade is coming. Karlsson is coming off 66 points in 75 games last season, and Pittsburgh's season will heavily influence whether he becomes available at all.

For now, it is a friendship photo that happens to be landing at a very interesting moment for two Original Six rivals turned coworkers.
