The length of Quinn Hughes' next contract with the Wild has been revealed

The Fourth Period's David Pagnotta said on Daily Faceoff that there is a belief the deal will land in the three- to four-year range, and that those talks are expected to gain momentum now that Makar has locked in his own extension.

The timing lines up. Colorado signed Makar to a $163.2 million, eight-year extension carrying a $20.4 million cap hit, the richest annual value in NHL history.

The Avalanche got the deal done before the September 15 deadline, since the new CBA caps a team's own extensions at seven years starting September 16.

That number now sets the ceiling defensemen point to in every negotiation league-wide, Hughes included.

A three- or four-year bridge would let Hughes bet on himself again at 29 or 30, chasing an even bigger payday once the salary cap climbs further. It also gives Minnesota flexibility rather than locking into a maximum-term deal in a rapidly rising cap environment.

The Athletic's Michael Russo suggested a similar framework earlier this month, noting a three-year term would give the Wild four years total before Hughes could re-enter the market, aligning with the timeline of his brother Jack's contract in New Jersey.

Hughes has already proven he is worth building around. He posted 53 points in 48 games with Minnesota while averaging more than 27 minutes a night. That workload led the entire NHL, a full minute ahead of second-place Zach Werenski.

He has also said he is open to staying, telling reporters at his end-of-season availability he preferred to get something worked out over the summer.

With Makar's number now public, Hughes and agent Pat Brisson have the clearest possible comparable to negotiate against.

Whether Minnesota meets that price on a shorter term or pushes for length may determine how quickly this gets finalized before training camp.
