Elliotte Friedman hints at a potential trade involving Mitch Marner
The last few games have been full of criticism for Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner and Elliotte Friedman had some hints regarding his future in Toronto.
During an appearance on Sportsnet 590 The Fan, Elliotte Friedman provided his thoughts on what the future may hold for Mitch Marner. He likened his situation to Elias Pettersson's who is also currently struggling.
"I think it's really critical. You look at Pettersson in Vancouver, you look at Marner in Toronto and you see a lot of similarities. You can see how both of those markets are reacting around those players early on. I think Marner is his own worst enemy in the sense that he puts a ton of pressure on himself in some ways I think he almost mentally straight jackets himself."
Members of the Canadian media and fans of the Leafs have been extremely hard on Mitch Marner due to his recent mediocre play.
Friedman also speculated that Marner's play would dictate how negotiations will go as Marner enters the last year of his 6 year contract.
"The calendar determines all and we're going to get to a point where he can extend. It'll come down to a) how well he plays, b) what his next contract looks like and c) if it comes to a trade, what they're all willing to do together."
Although it's not clear the direction the Leafs will take with Marner, it seems that a potential blockbuster trade is not completely out of the question.
One would assume the return for a player of that caliber would be massive, and could be massive in addressing the Leafs problems in other areas.
