Doug Armstrong linked to Maple Leafs, reigniting focus on Craig Berube

Jordan Schmaltz pushed Doug Armstrong as a Toronto target, and that instantly put Craig Berube back under the spotlight.
Armstrong is still St. Louis GM, signed through 2028-29 as president of hockey operations, with Alexander Steen set to take the Blues GM chair after this season.
This is not trade fluff, and it's not deadline smoke around a depth winger. It's a leadership story with a real succession clock already running in St. Louis.
Schmaltz didn't toss out a random name. He said Toronto would need a heavy hitter if it moves off Brad Treliving, and Armstrong is the kind of executive who won't blink at changing the mix.
That matters because Berube is not some detached piece in this conversation. He was hired by Toronto on May 17, 2024, and Armstrong was the executive who brought him to St. Louis before that Cup run.
So the fit is simple hockey logic. If MLSE wants more bite, more structure, and a roster that can play heavier without getting clunky, Armstrong's fingerprints match Berube's style better than another soft reset does.
Toronto's problem is that a front-office swing this big would not stop at the GM desk. It would force a call on whether Berube still fits the next roster build or gets attached to this season's mess.
Why this hits before the next game
The Leafs entered Saturday at 31-29-13, and the next Ducks game on Monday, March 30, already carried heat because of the Radko Gudas fallout. Now there's another layer over the room.
When a coach is linked to the same tree shake as the GM, every lineup call gets louder. Every healthy scratch, every blue-line pair, every flat start starts looking like evidence.
This is why Schmaltz's push landed. He didn't just name Doug Armstrong. He tied Toronto's next front-office move directly to what happens behind Craig Berube's bench.
