Joseph Woll got Craig Berube's clearest defense after Toronto's 5-1 loss in St. Louis.

The post wasn't just frustration. It was Berube drawing a hard line around his goalie and pushing the heat straight onto the bench in front of him.
"We had one player show up tonight, and that was our goalie. That's really what it boils down to."

- Craig Berube
That's where the story gets more serious for the Leafs. Joseph Woll is 27, he carries a $3.66 million cap hit through 2027-28, and Toronto already made a real bet on him as part of its roster build.
So when Berube says only the goalie showed up, he's telling you the crease is not the main problem. The skaters, the details, and the pushback level are.
Woll's season line backs that up enough to make the quote sting. He sat at 36 games, 15 wins, a 3.22 goals-against average, and a .904 save percentage entering this spot.
Toronto's team picture makes Berube's blast land even harder. The Leafs are 31-30-13 on March 29, good for 75 points, and sitting behind six Atlantic clubs in a season that has slipped into real danger.

Why Berube's quote matters now

This sounded less like a coach protecting one player and more like a coach warning his room. When the goalie gets singled out as the only Leaf who showed up, accountability is no longer subtle.
That usually leads somewhere. It can mean line juggling, reduced minutes, or a hard reset in practice before the next puck drop.
Berube also knows what public pressure does in a market like Toronto. A quote like that doesn't die after one bad road game. It follows the group into the next one.
Berube didn't blast his team to make noise. He did it because a 75-point team with this much money and expectation can't keep wasting solid goaltending.
