According to some reports, there is no indication that Paré will receive a fine or a suspension for his play that badly injured Patrik Laine in a pre-season game on Saturday night, a hit for which Cedric Pare was quickly jumped by Canadiens enforcer Arber Xhekaj.
Although it didn't look like Cedric Pare was trying to intentionally hurt Laine, it was clear that he stepped in Laine's skate path with his knee extended, and to not give a suspension or even a fine for this play sets a bad precedent around the NHL that plays like that are ok to make, which they absolutely are not.
Former Habs defender P.K Subban, who was in attendance for the game on Saturday, shared his thoughts on the hit through a video on X, and he was not happy with Cedric Pare.
Subban clearly thinks that NHL stars deserve some more respect in the NHL, and that AHL lifers like Pare shouldn't be putting themselves in a position like that to hurt stars.
If the NHL is striving to make the league a safer place, then plays like Pare's hit on Laine should come with a suspension, or a fine at the very least, so that AHL players who are trying to prove themselves don't get too carried away when playing in an ultimately meaningless pre-season game.
Ultimately, I don't think Cedric Pare was out to injure Laine on this play, it was an unfortunate turn of events that ended up with a bonafide NHL player getting injured by a player who will likely never play in the NHL, causing much more uproar than if it had been a regular NHLer laying that hit on Laine.
