The Maple Leafs made a huge change after another playoff disappointment, and now CEO Keith Pelley has made a surprise statement on a big front office change.

After 11 years as the President of Hockey Operations in Toronto, the Maple Leafs decided to move on from Brendan Shanahan following the ninth straight season with a playoff appearance that ended before the Eastern Conference Finals.
According to reports, it appears as though Shanahan is ready to join the front office of the New York Islanders, the team that just hired Mathieu Darche as their General Manager, but that has fans in Toronto questioning who exactly will replace Shanahan.
In his first press conference since moving on from Shanahan, CEO Keith Pelley answered that question and he kept it rather simple: nobody.
«Winning is the only thing that matters. That's what I said last year, that's what ownership is committed to, that's what we're committed to. I have the utmost confidence in Brad Treliving and Craig Berube.

I'm not looking to replace Brendan Shanahan, I'm looking to work closer with Brad and Craig. In any other business, we will evaluate all facets of the organization in terms of how we utilize resources.
This will give much more power to both Treliving and Berube, who have spent two and one year with the Maple Leafs respectively, with these comments from Pelley showing confidence in what these two bring to the organization.
As for the off-season, Pelley is confident that this team can still be a contender, as he notes they'll use the next few weeks before the off-season officially begins to find a way to use their resources to finally get them over the hump.
«We have all the resources here to be a championship team. But it's using the resources in the right way and how we structure those utilization of the resources that could make the difference. And that's what we will spend the next weeks looking at.»

With Mitch Marner and/or John Tavares potentially on the way out, it's unclear how Toronto will play this summer as they look to finally get back to the Stanley Cup Finals, and if they're going to do so, it will be on the back of Treliving and Berube, who will now take on the responsibilities of Shanahan's role in Toronto.
