Auston Matthews explains the old golf cart pond photo with his buddies, and the Maple Leafs captain makes it very clear he wasn't the one who got too close.
Auston Matthews was shown an old photo of himself and a few buddies standing in a pond beside a sunken golf cart, and the Maple Leafs captain had the whole story ready.
By his telling, it was his first time ever playing golf.
He went out with a few guys from his minor hockey team, and everything was fine until one of them got too close to the water.
The pond took the cart, and it never worked again.
Matthews made sure everyone knew he wasn't involved.
"That was my first time playing golf. Me and a couple guys from my minor hockey team went and played golf, and there was a little pond that one of the guys, I wasn't involved, got too close to the water, and the water just took the cart… It wasn't working after.”

This is exactly the kind of story fans love.
Matthews isn't always one to share goofy moments from his teenage years, so a photo like this gives fans a rare peek at the person behind the superstar numbers.
His golf game has come a long way
Matthews didn't stay a beginner for long.
Sports Illustrated reported in 2017 that he took up golf after his rookie season, started out shooting in the triple digits, and later got down to an 83 at TPC Scottsdale.
Not bad for a guy whose first outing ended with a sunken cart.
The pond incident clearly didn't slow him down on the ice either.
Matthews became the all-time goals leader in Maple Leafs history in 2026.
Back to business in Vegas
The jokes will have to wait, because Toronto is back in action tonight.
The Leafs visit the Vegas Golden Knights on Thursday, with puck drop set for 10 p.m. ET.
Until then, the photo keeps making the rounds, and somewhere out there one of his old minor hockey teammates is probably hearing about that cart all over again.
