Simon Edvinsson remains unsigned and has yet to suit up for the Detroit Red Wings this season, and the early market for the young defenseman is already coming into focus.
Insider David Pagnotta shed light on that interest during an appearance on the Tom Gazzola show, naming three clubs that have reached out.
There are teams like Philly and Seattle and Nashville and others that have poked around
That puts the Flyers, Kraken and Predators on the radar, though the word "others" suggests the list may not end there.
Why Edvinsson Is Drawing Attention
It is easy to see why. The sixth overall pick in 2021 is 23 years old, stands 6-foot-6 and posted 25 points in 72 games last season, including nine goals. Defensemen with that size and offensive ability rarely become available, especially ones this young.
Teams hunting for a young, mobile blueliner will see Edvinsson as a rare chance to add a top-four piece without waiting for free agency.
Interest has grown since Elliotte Friedman reported Saturday that word around the league is Edvinsson would prefer a trade. Detroit has not given up on a new deal, though. The Red Wings have told other clubs that re-signing him is still the plan.
What Detroit Does Next
Contract talks have stalled over term. Friedman reported Detroit does not want to hand out a long deal, while Pagnotta reported earlier this week that Edvinsson is seeking the maximum seven years. The two sides were also reported not to be talking as of Saturday.
As a restricted free agent, Edvinsson has no say in where he lands, so Detroit holds the power to choose a trade partner.
That control matters as the Red Wings juggle a second headache in the Dylan Larkin trade saga, all under interim GM Shawn Horcoff.
Poking around is not the same as making an offer, and Detroit has shown no sign of rushing. Still, with a player this talented reportedly asking out, expect the calls to continue.
