The Tampa Bay Lightning's plan for Steven Stamkos leaks
The reporter David Pagnotta revealed what the Tampa Bay Lightning is planning for Steven Stamkos' contractual situation in a recent report.
Ever since the Lightning was eliminated by the Florida Panthers in the first round of the playoffs, the main question has been about Steven Stamkos and his future in Tampa.
The captain is set to become a free agent and it's all but clear what the future has in stock for him. At 34, he just had a 81-point season, showing that he can still play a key role for a team.
In interviews, he often shared that he wants to stay with the Lightning. But unfortunately, it's not that simple. Even if general manager Julien BriseBois also wants to keep him, it might be complicated to navigate under the cap space; considering the Bolts' recent acquisitions.
"He belongs here. We know it, he knows it."
David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period made a major statement about his future.
According to him, the Lightning's GM wants to focus on Stamkos, and prioritize his contract negotiations over Victor Hedman's, who still has a year on his contract, but will become eligible to sign a new deal on July 1st.
The reporter also added that BriseBois plans on starting to negotiate with Stamkos around the start of June.
Here's his full delaration:
"The Tampa Bay Lightning plan on talking to Victor Hedman's camp this summer about a long-term extension, but they've prioritized captain Steven Stamkos. Bolts GM Julien BriseBois wants to deal with Stamkos first, and those conversations are expected to really get going around the start of June."
We should have further details to report on that situation in the coming weeks. Make sure to stay tuned for what'll come next!
