The Tampa Bay Lightning may be running out of ways to fix their Nikita Kucherov problem. According to The Athletic's Pierre LeBrun, even a full surrender on the contract would not be enough to keep the reigning NHL MVP in Florida.

LeBrun posed a blunt hypothetical: what if Tampa Bay finally caves and meets the $20 million annual price tag over six years? His answer, based on what he was told, is that Kucherov still would not sign.
As LeBrun put it:
He's adamant he feels so disrespected that it's too late for that.

Why This Is About More Than Money

That detail changes the entire conversation. Kucherov is 33 and in the final season of a $9.5 million deal, and the talks that were supposed to extend it have stalled. Reports say Tampa Bay offered four years at $15 million per season in July, then six years at the same figure in September.
The Athletic's Chris Johnston reported the winger wanted roughly $20 million. Kucherov says the trade request comes from a lack of communication with general manager Julien BriseBois, not just money.
The Lightning have said publicly they have no intention of trading him, and coach Jon Cooper insists Kucherov is fully part of the team for now.
Kucherov has kept playing, and he passed Steven Stamkos as the franchise's all-time points leader days before the request became public.

What Happens Next

Still, a stated intent to play on does not solve the underlying split. Kucherov has a modified no-trade clause and a 10-team approved list, which gives him say over where he lands.
LeBrun has also wondered whether he could eventually follow Dylan Larkin's example and withhold his services, though his agent, Dan Milstein, has downplayed that idea.
With his contract expiring after 2026-27, free agency looms as the natural exit if no deal materializes.
For Tampa Bay, the relationship, not the dollar figure, now decides this. Unless that trust is repaired, a Kucherov departure looks like a matter of when, not if.
