San Jose Sharks owner Hasso Plattner is revealing former Sharks forward Tomas Hertl's plea to get him to a contending team to try and win a Stanley Cup before another injury potentially derailed his career.

The San Jose Sharks traded forward Tomas Hertl to the Vegas Golden Knights in March of 2024 for a 1st round pick in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft and forward David Edstrom.
It was a way for Hertl to escape from the Sharks, who were undergoing a painful rebuild and had no chance at competing for a Stanley Cup, much less a playoff spot.
Sharks owner Hasso Plattner recently disclosed that Hertl begged to be traded from San Jose to a contender, citing his fear about suffering another knee injury that could potentially derail his career before he got a chance to raise the Stanley Cup.
And when Tomas came and said, 'Hasso, please let me go. I played 10 years for the San Jose Sharks. I did everything possible. I got three knee injuries. If I get one more, I'm done. I have only so many years. Let me go to a team where I have a chance to win this goddamn Cup'.

And I said, Tomas, we'll let you gowhich I regret, because I really liked him and we always had fun together and joked. He always had a smile on his face. He was a good guy.

Although Plattner says he regrets letting Hertl go, it was probably the best move for both parties.

The Sharks' Owner Also Regrets Letting Joe Pavelski Walk

The Sharks' owner also regrets letting former captain Joe Pavelski leave in free agency in 2019.
He signed a contract with the Dallas Stars, playing another 5 years in the NHL with them after having played against them so many times in a Sharks sweater.
Since Pavelski last played for the Sharks, the team hasn't played a single playoff game.
