Hasso Plattner, the owner of the San Jose Sharks, is admitting what he believes was a mistake in acquiring Erik Karlsson, considering what the team gave up to get him from the Ottawa Senators.

Current Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Erik Karlsson continues to be surrounded by trade rumours, and even though GM Kyle Dubas tried to find a trade partner for him over the summer, nothing materialized.
He was previously a member of the San Jose Sharks, who acquired him from the Ottawa Senators in September of 2018 for Chris Tierney, Rudolfs Balcers, Dylan DeMelo, and former Sharks Draft pick Josh Norris, as well as a 2020 unprotected 1st round Draft pick.
The Sharks only made the playoffs once with Karlsson, which was in 2019 when they went to the WCF, losing to the eventual Stanley Cup champion St. Louis Blues.
Sharks owner Hasso Plattner is now saying that he would have rather let things play out with the assets they gave up to acquire Karlsson.
One mistake I want to share with you was that Stutzle and Norris were let go or not acquired in the draft. Think about the last three years, with Stutzle and Norris the team would have been a different team.

Letting Joe Pavelski Walk From San Jose is Another Regret of Plattner

In addition to implying that he would like to reverse the Erik Karlsson trade from 2018, Plattner also said that letting former captain Joe Pavelski, who was one of the best players in team history, walk in free agency.
Pavelski signed with the Dallas Stars, who went to the SCF in Pavelski's 1st year with the team. He would play 5 years in a Stars sweater before retiring in 2024.
Had the Sharks kept the assets they gave up for Karlsson as well as re-signing Pavelski, maybe their fortunes would have been different over the last few years.

Would the Sharks have been better off without acquiring Erik Karlsson?
