The Detroit Red Wings were blown out in their season opener by Montreal, and as a result, Todd McLellan blasted his team for their performance.
The Detroit Red Wings entered the 2025/26 NHL season full of hope and optimism that they could finally break their Stanley Cup Playoffs drought, but their opening performance hasn't helped them.
Despite being at home, the team were blown away 5-1 by the Montreal Canadiens, and with the team looking thoroughly outmatched, their Head Coach was not happy after the game.
Todd McLellan Calls Out His Team for Opening Night Loss
While many would look to take positives out of the game, Head Coach Todd McLellan clearly didn't see many, as he was quick to
call out his team, stating it's time to fix things, especially after spending weeks of training camp preparing for these exact moments.
Clearly it's still a huge issue. We just played the game; we didn't play to win the game. And, we have no chance. And the players will say, and probably have already said to you, that you know what, we can fix this. When? It's time; some of them have been doing it for years. It's time. We just spent three weeks, three and a half weeks of training camp dealing with these situations.
Now, if it happened once or twice in a game, it'd be ok, but there was maybe six or seven outnumbered rushes at the end of the first period. It's unacceptable; we'll have to drill it back into them.
McLellan was clearly irked by the team continually giving up odd-man rushes, and with the team full of veterans that know better, it's clearly not acceptable to their Head Coach.
The schedule doesn't get easier for Detroit, as they take on the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday night, and if things keep getting worse, this team may be in for some more brutal comments from their Head Coach.
