San Jose absorbed Darnell Nurse's full $9.25 million with no retention, and fans called it a gift to Edmonton.

The cap math says otherwise.
Elliotte Friedman lit the fuse on 32 Thoughts, reporting that San Jose could have landed Morgan Rielly and instead preferred Nurse.
Re Sharks: "They coulda had Morgan Rielly, they got Darnell Nurse; I heard they really preferred Nurse, I heard that was a preference, they had a choice."

That framing put a target on Nurse before training camp. The louder complaint, though, came from the cap crowd, who mocked Mike Grier for skipping retention entirely.

Retention is never free

Here is what the outrage skips. Salary retention is a favor the selling team charges for, usually in draft picks or a prospect.
Edmonton got Shakir Mukhamadullin, a stalled former first-rounder, plus the unsigned rights to fourth-round pick Zack Sharp. That is a near-empty return.
Ask why the price was so low, and the answer is the full salary. By eating all $9.25 million, San Jose paid Edmonton in cap dollars instead of assets it wanted to keep.

The one team that should say yes

Grier is carrying roughly $13 million in projected cap space and a young core still on entry-level money. That is the exact profile that should refuse retention.
A rebuilding team with room to spare has no reason to trade prospects for cap relief it does not need. Nurse's money is gone by 2030, before the Sharks' next defense wave needs paying.
The Rielly angle actually strengthens the case. Reports pegged Rielly's play as dwindling, while Nurse brings skating and back-to-back Cup Final experience the Sharks' kids have never had.
So this is not a blunder. It is a cap-space-rich club converting dollars nobody else values into a top-four defenseman for almost nothing.
Rielly or not, that is the trade fans across the league should study, not scold.

Did San Jose make the right call taking Nurse at full freight?
