San Jose Sharks general manager Mike Grier is already sold on what Darnell Nurse brings to his revamped defense corps.

Grier acquired Nurse from the Edmonton Oilers this offseason, sending Shakir Mukhamadullin and prospect Zack Sharp to Edmonton in return, and the move signals the Sharks' intent to speed up their rebuild.
Speaking about his blueliner, Grier didn't hold back on the praise.
Darnell is really athletic, a great skater, he has length, can defend, but he also can jump up in the play and can add a little bit of offense. He's another guy that is high character, so I think they'll both be great additions (Trouba & Him) to our room.

A Bigger, Tougher Blue Line

Nurse arrives in San Jose after 12 seasons with the Oilers, where he posted 24 points in 82 games last season and consistently ranked among the league's most physical defensemen.
San Jose took on the entirety of his $9.25 million cap hit, a clear statement that Grier views Nurse as a foundational piece rather than a rental.
Paired with the free agent signing of Jacob Trouba, the Sharks now boast two experienced, physical defensemen who combine for over 1,500 games of NHL experience.
That veteran presence is meant to shield San Jose's young core, including Macklin Celebrini and Will Smith, as they continue to develop.

Accelerating the Timeline

After missing the playoffs every season since 2019, San Jose appears unwilling to wait any longer on its prospects.
Grier's aggressive offseason, which also included signing winger Mason Marchment, suggests the Sharks are ready to compete sooner rather than later.
Whether Nurse can rebound from an uneven 2025-26 campaign remains a question mark, but Grier's confidence in his character and two-way skill set is clear.
For San Jose, the Nurse trade is as much about culture and leadership as it is about raw talent.
