Sidney Crosby’s return changes everything for the Penguins before Islanders showdown

Sidney Crosby skated Sunday under Dan Muse, and that changes everything for Pittsburgh before Monday's showdown with the Islanders.
King Jemison first flagged the sighting, and the practice look that followed showed Crosby back in the middle with Anthony Mantha and Rickard Rakell while Evgeni Malkin centered the next line.
That's the real story, not just that Crosby was on the ice. It's that Muse appears ready to hand him a top-line workload right away if he clears the last boxes.
Pittsburgh badly needs that reset. The Penguins lost 6-3 to Dallas on Saturday, and Muse's club heads into Monday calling it a critical divisional game against the New York Islanders.
Without Crosby, the whole forward group gets pushed out of place. Rakell loses his driver, Malkin has to carry more rush touches, and the bottom six gets exposed in matchup minutes.
Crosby also calms the bench. Before his latest absence, he had 64 points in 60 games this season, still taking the hard matchups and still running big minutes at center.
Crosby's return is about lineup order
This is where the Penguins can look like themselves again. Mantha on Crosby's wing gives Pittsburgh a net-front look, while Rakell gets back to reading off Crosby instead of forcing plays on his own.
It also lets Malkin play in a better slot. Since returning from suspension, he's already shown he can still tilt a game fast when the matchup is right.
The Rust and Acciari absences still matter, and Saturday showed how thin Pittsburgh gets when details slip, especially on special teams and depth usage.
But if Crosby is truly back for puck drop Monday, this stops being a survival story. It turns into a real playoff-style test, with the captain back in the middle where Pittsburgh's season still lives.
