Wayne Simmonds officially gets a new job with his former team
Former player of the Philadelphia Flyers Wayne Simmonds has just been hired by the team in the role of hockey operations.
Wayne Simmonds is transitioning from the ice to the front office without much turbulence. After inking a one-day deal in April to retire a Philadelphia Flyer, he is now part of their operation in another capacity. The gritty-style winger during his time in the NHL has assumed a pair of dual roles with the Flyers, one as community relations ambassador and the other as hockey operations consultant.
This is his first real front-office job. Wayne Simmonds, 36, last played this past season for the Toronto Maple Leafs but spent much of that season as a free agent before the team signed him, before calling it a career in March. Now, he'll work closely with Flyers general manager Daniel Briere and could be a name to watch for future promotions.
It's a familiar path
into hockey operations for former players, one which the St. Louis Blues' Alexander Steen began just last year. That said, Steen was promoted already and may take the reins as GM of the Blues in 2026, so such a timeline could be an expectation for Wayne Simmonds in Philadelphia.
Drafted by the Kings in the second round in 2007, Wayne Simmonds played three seasons in Los Angeles before being traded to Philadelphia in 2011. During his time with the Flyers, he would become a fan favorite, scoring 203 goals and adding 175 assists for 378 points over 584 games, while also racking up 784 penalty minutes.
Wayne Simmonds isn't the only new face within the Flyers organization. Another former NHLer, Reid Simpson, will also join their staff as their director of European pro scouting after spending a number of years with the Montreal Canadiens.
