Trevor Zegras was penalized for something the NHL hadn't called in 13 years

Trevor Zegras just became the answer to a trivia question nobody expected to matter in 2026.

During Thursday's preseason game between the Philadelphia Flyers and Boston Bruins, Zegras was called for a two minute minor penalty in the second period for improperly wearing his equipment.

His crime was a tucked in jersey.

It sounds too small to be real, but the NHL is not playing around this preseason.

Referees have been told to warn players first if their gear, including neck guards, visors, and jerseys, is not worn correctly.

A second violation brings the penalty.

Zegras had already been warned earlier in the game, so when his jersey rode up again before a shift, officials sent him to the box.

Jerseys must be untucked at the start of a shift under Rule 9.5, which covers protective equipment.

It is fine if a jersey pops up mid shift, the issue is only at the moment a player steps onto the ice.

Zegras said after the game he plays with his jersey tucked and forgot to fix it after a change.

What makes this stand out is how rare it is.

According to Scouting The Refs, nobody had been penalized for a tucked jersey since 2013, when Evgeni Malkin drew a similar call.

That is a 13 year gap, and Zegras is now the answer to a trivia question for years to come.

The bigger picture is a reminder the league is serious about equipment this season.

A repeat offender would reportedly face a misconduct next, so players are officially on notice.

For a meaningless preseason game, this turned into one of the more talked about moments of the week, and probably not the last time this rule gets tested.
