Flyers may part ways with $5 million players Cam Atkinson and Cal Petersen
Philadelphia Flyers GM Daniel Briere has commented on the futures of both goaltender Cal Petersen and forward Cam Atkinson heading into the offseason.
Currently, Cam Atkinson and Cal Petersen are both in the final years of their lengthy contracts. Atkinson is set to make $5,875,000 next year against the cap while Petersen is set to make a flat $5 million against the cap.
With the pair being so much, and both relatively underperforming in 2023-24, the Flyers may look to trade or buy out the pair.
GM Daniel Briere recently commented on the matter.
"We're looking at every option because we're tight on cap space, we're still looking at every possible option in that direction. Both Cam Atkinson and Cal Petersen want to prove that they can still play in the NHL. So we're evaluating all of that, but we haven't made a final decision yet."
"We're looking at every option. It gives us the chance to maybe be open-minded to being creative with something different." - Daniel Briere
Atkinson scored 13 goals and 28 points last year for the Flyers while playing in 70 games along the way. Petersen spent the majority of his season last year in the AHL but when he did get a short stint in the NHL he underperformed posting a 3.90 GAA and an .864 sv%.
We will now await to see what moves Briere makes and if the Flyers will be moving on from either of these players.
