NHL Player Safety fined Brady Tkachuk $2,500, and Travis Green now has a bench-discipline problem to shut down fast.

The league's ruling was reported through NHL Player Safety's post, tied to unsportsmanlike conduct toward an opponent while Tkachuk was on Ottawa's bench. The tweet is here:
This isn't a contract story, but the roster angle still matters. Tkachuk is Ottawa's captain, his 2025-26 cap hit is $8,205,714, and he's still one of the club's tone-setters every night.
That's why this fine lands harder than the dollar amount. Ottawa can live with edge. Ottawa can't have its top winger handing the other bench or the officials extra reason to watch him.
Tkachuk entered April 3 with 20 goals, 32 assists and 52 points in 2025-26. When a player carrying that much of the emotional and offensive load drifts into distraction, it changes line shifts, matchup trust and late-game bench usage.
Green's part in this is simple: keep the temperature high between whistles, not on the bench. That's the balance every playoff-bound team needs from its captain in April.

Why Ottawa should care about this right now

The Senators beat Buffalo 4-1 on April 2 and improved to 39-26-10. Their next game is Saturday, April 4, at home against Minnesota, so there's no long runway to let this turn into a habit.
The fine doesn't damage Ottawa's cap sheet, but it does spotlight how thin the line is for a team trying to finish clean. One bad retaliatory sequence in the next game can swing special teams and momentum fast.
Tkachuk's value hasn't changed. The assignment has. Ottawa needs the net-front captain, the forecheck driver and the top-line irritant, not a player giving away focus from the pine.
That's the strategic takeaway from this fine. Green won't want less Brady Tkachuk. He'll want the same fire, aimed at the crease and the blue paint, not the bench rail.
