NHL.com had Cole Caufield at 49 goals Thursday, and Martin St-Louis now has a top-line scorer one shot from 50.

Caufield, 25, is in year 3 of an 8-year contract with a $7,850,000 cap hit through 2030-31. That changes this from a feel-good night into a franchise build story.
The postgame clip gave the quote legs, but the quote itself is what hit. It wasn't nostalgia. It was a scoreboard.
"I think it was worth it — that’s what I’d say."

- Cole Caufield
Montreal beat the Rangers 3-2, improved to 44-21-10, and pushed its winning streak to 7. Caufield scored twice, including the winner, and that's why this landed harder than any empty-net chase would have.
He's at 83 points in 74 games with 12 game-winners. That's not just finishing touch. That's a winger deciding nights for a club fighting for playoff seeding.
The old Laval send-down from 2021-22 used to look like a setback in his story. On April 3, 2026, it looked more like the line he crossed before taking over.

This is where St-Louis changed the picture

St-Louis didn't ask Caufield to be less dangerous. He gave him steady runway, top-unit trust, and let the shot stay central to the attack.
Now the pressure rolls forward to Saturday against New Jersey. The Devils don't just have to worry about Caufield getting 50; they have to guard the weak side every shift Nick Suzuki is on the ice.
Montreal's best scorer is signed long term, peaking in real time, and forcing matchup changes right before puck drop.
Caufield passed on the hat trick look. Fine. His loudest finish came after the game anyway.
