Top NHL insider Pierre LeBrun has dropped some massive news that explains how Rangers head coach Peter Laviolette could be the next one to be fired.
The New York Rangers, with head coach Peter Laviolette, are tanking, and they don't have a lot of time to waste.
Just one year after finishing with the Presidents' Trophy, the Rangers are clinging to razor-thin hope for making the playoffs.
They sit sixth in the Metropolitan Division, eight points back of Montreal for that final wild-card spot and with four games remaining. Their playoff fate is no longer in their control.
Laviolette's recent comments may be what ends his tenure in New York
Recent action has only served to worsen the situation. Following a 5-1 blowout defeat to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Monday, Laviolette had little by way of insight or inspiration, a concerning sign from a coach who seems to be out of ideas.
"I don't have a message right now," Laviolette told reporters after Monday's loss. "I don't go into the locker room after the game."
Earlier in the week, following a 4-0 defeat to the Devils, Laviolette seemed dazed when asked about the team's fall down the standings.
"If you would've asked me this summer, I'd say 'yes,' " Laviolette told the New York Post. "If you're asking me on the daily, if you're asking me from yesterday to today, the answer is 'no. ' We need to win more hockey games. It's not something that I woke up this morning and was surprised by. We've been in this position all year. We've been outside the line, we've been just inside the line, and it doesn't surprise me at this point."
The Rangers' fall from the top of the league to below the playoff contender position is breathtaking, and the blame does not stop on the bench. General Manager Chris Drury has a share in taking responsibility for an underperforming roster.
Insiders are already guessing what is next. This might have been the last straw for Laviolette, Pierre LeBrun states.
"In talking to other people around the league, the low hanging fruit, the expectation from a lot of people that I have talked to is that Peter Laviolette could get fired"
