Matt Rempe was one of the biggest names in hockey a year ago, but after struggling to develop his game, he may not be back in the NHL anytime soon.
In 2023/24, Matt Rempe brought the fighting spirit back to the NHL, appearing in many highlight reel tilts throughout the year, but with a limited game, questions were asked about his future in the NHL.
This season, Rempe has appeared in just three NHL games, and without the need for a fight every single night, it doesn't bode well for his potential role with the Rangers moving forward.
When asked about his development, Rempe stated that he would like to model his game on Winnipeg Jets standout Adam Lowry, to still become a good hockey player at the next level.
"Incredibly driven, incredibly focused and wants to get better every single day," is how Kreider described Rempe. "He's super disciplined and has incredible willpower, and he's a sponge. He's just going to keep on getting better, which is scary for every other team."
Rempe said Kreider and Jets captain Adam Lowry are examples of the type of player he wants to become.
"I'm just trying to get better," Rempe said. "I feel like I can be a very effective bottom-six player who is fast, mean, physical, skates well, protects pucks, goes to the net, is good around the net, can play center or wing. I want to be a good penalty killer. I feel like I can be a guy one day on a shutdown line that can be very hard to play against and also create some offense around the net and bring pucks to the net. I've got a long way to go but that's all I'm working toward."
Unfortunately, we've not seen that yet, and in the AHL he has struggled through 5 games, and given how good this Rangers team is, it simply gives him no path to return unless several injuries hit.
At 22 years of age, Rempe still has time on his side, and if he can work hard on his game in the AHL he may one day get back to the top level, but for now, there's no foreseeable path to get him back to the Rangers in 2024/25 or beyond.
