The New York Rangers need a new Head Coach, and reportedly, they're willing to outbid any team to land the services of the recently fired Mike Sullivan.
After three unsuccessful seasons, the Pittsburgh Penguins moved on from Mike Sullivan early in the off-season, and while the team struggled in recent times, the belief around the league is still that Sullivan is one of, if not the best coaches in the entire NHL.
Now, with no less than 8 Head Coach vacancies around the league, Sullivan is expected to draw significant interest, with both the Boston Bruins and the New York Rangers revealed as ideal landing spots for the veteran.
Elliotte Friedman recently revealed that Rangers GM Chris Drury coveted Sullivan back in 2021 before hiring Gerard Gallant, but with the Penguins not letting him go, he moved on to another alternative.
«In 2021, when Chris Drury was hired as GM, he didn't hire Gallant until he knew Sullivan was staying [in PIT]...Until someone beats the Rangers out for Sullivan's services, that's who I'm picking...He's their #1."
This time around, Sullivan is free and so are the Rangers after moving on from Peter Laviolette, and following up on those others comments, Friedman reveals his belief that New York won't be outbid this time around.
«I cannot imagine [the New York Rangers] allowing anyone to outdo themselves in the pursuit of Sullivan."
Ultimately, the Rangers have one of the most desirable situations in the NHL, as they have the big market combined with a talented team, and while they underperformed on and off the ice in 2024/25, given the right off-season, this could be the perfect landing spot for Sullivan.
