The New York Islanders have a serious bone to pick with the NHL after their would-be winning goal late in regulation was disallowed by the on-ice officials.

The New York Islanders and Columbus Blue Jackets are neck and neck in the tightly-packed Eastern Conference standings with both clubs battling for a postseason spot.
During tonight's game at UBS Arena, the Islanders felt that they were shortchanged by the NHL when a would-be game-winning goal from Kyle Palmieri with 9.8 seconds left in the third period was disallowed.
Palmieri deflected a shot from the point past goaltender Elvis Merzlikins a moment after he made contact with him in the crease.
Referee Michael Markovic immediately disallowed the goal, because the play isn't reviewable unless the NHL initiates an official review, the call on the ice stood.
It was especially insulting to the Islanders, who eventually fell 4-3 in the shootout. Understandably, both Palmieri and teammate Bo Horvat were extremely unhappy afterward.
To be honest that's one of the worst no-goal calls I've ever seen.

I think it was f--ing embarrassing.

Additionally, former NHL defenseman and current "Spittin' Chiclets" host Ryan Whitney was incredulous in his reaction:
The responses on social media varied from disappointment to outright anger:
Oh my. There's gonna be some upset fans

How is that no goal? The ref called it dead live? wtf???

Absolute joke of a league

This league sucks. Have to go with the call on the ice? F**k you. You hate the Islanders, that's always been clear, but this is egregious. A clear as day finger to Isles fans.

However, there were a handful of responses who felt the call was the right one.
So easy to see, right call. Goalie Interference, NYI player skates in blue paint while hitting goalie which prevented him from placing himself in his own crease. NO goal.

Interference, he skated towards the blue paint and Mez pushed him out while setting up for the shot. Thats going to be called no goal every time.

Did the NHL make the right call in a game with so much on the line in terms of playoff implications?
