The New Jersey Devils acquired Jacob Markstrom last off-season, and now, it appears as though they've made strides towards an extension with the 35-year old.

Last summer, the New Jersey Devils went all in on acquiring Jacob Markstrom, giving up Kevin Bahl and what would be the No. 16 overall pick in the 2025 NHL Draft to the Calgary Flames to land the star goaltender.
In his first season with the team, he posted a 2.50 GAA and a .900 save percentage, and with the team hoping to be healthy this season, there's a major possibility that they can be Stanley Cup contenders in 2025/26.

Devils Discussing an Extension With Markstrom

After that campaign, the Devils are clearly invested in Markstrom as the goaltender that can take them deep in the post-season, and according to General Manager Tom Fitzgerald in a discussion with David Pagnotta, the two parties have had healthy discussions.
Recently, it was reported that the team were interested in a long-term deal with Markstrom, and while he was very good in his first campaign with the team, at 35-years of age, there's always an inherent risk with a long-term contract.
However, Markstrom has shown that he can be elite when healthy for the Devils, and if their core group up front stays healthy, this is a team that believe they can make a run in the wide open Eastern Conference.
Ultimately, there aren't any better options immediately available for New Jersey, so a short-term deal with Markstrom would make sense, and according to Fitzgerald, things are moving in the right direction to make that happen.
