Pierre McGuire says the Montreal Canadiens are about to make a move this offseason, with Kirill Marchenko and RFA deals still in play.
The Montreal Canadiens have been quiet this summer, but according to Pierre McGuire, that is about to change.
Speaking on Toronto Sports Rush, McGuire grouped the Canadiens with the Maple Leafs, Panthers and Lightning as teams around the Atlantic Division that have made real improvements, while adding that Detroit has been floundering by comparison.
The line that stood out was his read on Montreal specifically, he said the team is about to make a move, and he sounded confident saying it.
That is a notable statement given how little the Canadiens have actually done since their playoff run ended.
Kent Hughes has stayed patient, but patience does not always mean inactivity behind the scenes, and McGuire's comments suggest something could be close.
What could the move actually be
The most talked about name attached to Montreal remains Kirill Marchenko, who has been floated as a fit for most of the offseason if the Blue Jackets are willing to move him.
That would be the headline addition, but it is not the only possibility.
Restricted free agents Zachary Bolduc and Arber Xhekaj still need new contracts, and if talks stall, a sign and trade for either player is not out of the question.
McGuire lumping Montreal in with three teams that made clear, notable additions this summer is what makes his comment stick.
It was not framed as Montreal simply re-signing its own pending RFAs, it read like he expects something bigger.
Why the timing matters
Training camp is only weeks away, which puts real pressure on Hughes to have his roster in order before puck drop.
If McGuire is right, Canadiens fans may not have to wait much longer to find out what that move looks like.
