Patrik Laine is still searching for a team, and the New York Rangers are still searching for a forward. The fit might be simpler than either side realizes.

General manager Chris Drury has been linked to Laine by virtue of the team's desire to sign another forward. Laine is still on the market, and he provides the team with a cheap, risk-free option.
Still, the logic is hard to ignore. The Rangers have overhauled their roster this offseason, adding pieces like Pavel Dorofeyev and Oliver Bjorkstrand, but their top nine could use another proven scoring threat.
That is where Laine comes in. At 28, he already has 224 career goals across 537 games, and his power play production remains elite.
In just 52 games with Montreal in 2024-25, he scored 20 goals, 15 of them on the man advantage, exactly the kind of specialist skill New York's power play could use.

A Low-Risk Bet for Drury

The Rangers do not need to hand out a long-term commitment.
Laine is reportedly seeking a short-term, incentive-laced 'prove yourself' contract, which limits New York's exposure if the injury history resurfaces.

What Laine Gets in Return

For Laine, a bonus-heavy structure means he controls his own value. A strong bounce-back season in New York boosts his next contract, while a bigger stage helps him rebuild his reputation after an injury-plagued stretch in Montreal.
There are obviously some fears when it comes to Laine. He has been described as unmotivated at times, and those injury problems are pretty killer.
However, that doesn't mean Laine can't come back and show people what he is made of. There was a time when he had over 40 goals in a season.
He can still become a productive player, and the Rangers would be a great environment for him to thrive.
