Arber Xhekaj gave Martin St-Louis a lineup problem at the worst possible time for Montreal.

The Canadiens lost 3-2 to the Buffalo Sabres, and the series is now tied 2-2.
But the bigger story was not the score. It was St-Louis cutting Xhekaj down to 3:46 of ice time.
That is not a normal third-pair workload. That is a playoff warning label.
Xhekaj had six shifts in the first half of the game, then never got back into the rhythm over the final 30 minutes.
The clip only adds pressure. Xhekaj catches Konsta Helenius high from behind while the play keeps moving, and the lack of an immediate spotlight made the sequence louder after the fact.

St-Louis now has a trust decision

This is where the Canadiens' blue line gets uncomfortable. A defenseman can survive a rough shift. He cannot survive disappearing from the bench plan in Game 4.
Xhekaj's previous career low was 5:11 against the Carolina Hurricanes on March 29. This went lower, with Montreal trying to protect every shift.
Game 5 moves to Buffalo. Road matchups are harder to manage, and Lindy Ruff can chase the pairings he wants.
St-Louis also shortened Zachary Bolduc, Kirby Dach, and Joe Veleno, so this was not only about one player. But Xhekaj's number was the sharpest message.
Dach played 8:51 despite having 5 points in 11 playoff games. Bolduc had 6 points in 11 playoff games and still landed at 9:39.
Xhekaj is different because his role is already narrower. If the staff does not trust him at five-on-five, there is no easy way to hide him.
That is why Canadiens fans feared this news. It points less to discipline from the league and more to discipline from his own bench.
Game 5 now becomes a roster call, not just a response. St-Louis has to decide whether Xhekaj brings enough bite to justify the risk.
