Jakub Dobes turned a routine back to back into a Canadiens warning shot about how the NHL still handles goalie logistics.

This is bigger than one weekend. It is a stress test on a system that asks clubs to carry three goalies, then gets uneasy when they use that depth creatively.
Montreal beat Nashville 4-1 on March 28 with Jacob Fowler in net. The next day, Dobes handled Carolina in a 3-1 win, and the split worked on the ice.
Alain Crête said the Canadiens were warned earlier in the season for sending a goalie ahead to the next city, which explains why Dobes stayed with the team in Nashville.
The eye test here is not dramatic. It is airline math, sleep, recovery, and protecting the crease for the next night.
Dobes is 24, drafted in 2020 in the fifth round by Montreal. Fowler is 21, drafted in 2023 in the third round by Montreal, so this is a young goalie pipeline already shaping coaching choices.

Jakub Dobes pushes Montreal Canadiens planning

Fans are right to roll their eyes, because the league seems to dislike the workaround more than the workload.
Montreal is not gaming the system for an edge, it is trying to keep two nights of goaltending stable while the standings tighten.
The Canadiens are 45-21-10 after Saturday's 4-3 shootout win over New Jersey. In this stretch, every goalie decision touches playoff seeding, bench trust, and who gets the crease if the games turn heavy.
Dobes also earned recent wins over Carolina, Tampa Bay, and New Jersey, while Fowler started in Nashville and New York. Martin St. Louis is not hiding from the rotation now, he is building around it.
The funny part is the league already agreed to a full-time traveling emergency replacement starting in 2026-27. That tells you the current setup is the outdated piece, not Montreal's instinct.
This feels like a warning from yesterday's NHL, and the next milestone is whether the Canadiens keep trusting Dobes when the games start to look like spring.
