Minnesota Wild put a deadline on signing Quinn Hughes

According to Michael Russo on the Worst Seats in the House podcast, the Wild are treating opening night as an informal cutoff point in extension talks with their star defenseman.

Russo also suggested the front office initially expected this negotiation to move faster than last year's process with Kirill Kaprizov.

Minnesota acquired Hughes from Vancouver in a blockbuster December trade that sent Marco Rossi, Zeev Buium, Liam Ohgren and a 2026 first-round pick to the Canucks.

Extension conversations reportedly opened around July 1, with optimism that a deal could come together quickly given Hughes' stated desire for clarity on his future.

That timeline has slipped. Weeks have passed without an agreement, even as Hughes has publicly acknowledged feeling a sense of obligation to the Wild given the magnitude of the trade package Minnesota surrendered to land him.

Last offseason's Kaprizov extension saga dragged for months before Minnesota ultimately signed its franchise winger to a record-setting deal.

Russo's comments suggest the Wild anticipated Hughes, a former Norris Trophy winner, would be a more straightforward conversation. Instead, the talks have taken on a similar shape.

With training camp approaching and opening night now serving as an unofficial checkpoint, pressure is mounting on both sides to find common ground before the 2026-27 season begins.

This is a developing situation, and any contract terms remain speculative until confirmed by the team or Hughes' camp.
