Elliotte Friedman just gave the Wild their clearest extension update yet regarding Quinn Hughes

Quinn Hughes just gave John Hynes and the Wild a louder extension signal than any boxscore could.
Elliotte Friedman's update changes the tone around Minnesota. This no longer reads like hopeful noise around a rental-style swing.
Friedman said Hughes respects that Bill Guerin made the deal without a guaranteed extension, and believes Hughes will reward that bet.
Guerin did not buy safety. He bought access, trust, and time with one of the NHL's cleanest blue-line drivers.
Hughes had 80 points in 77 games this season, with 73 assists and a +2 rating. That is top-pair control, not just production.
His contract carries a $7,850,000 cap hit through 2026-2027, which makes July 1 the first real pressure point for Minnesota.
Bill Guerin's risk is now turning into leverage
The update is not dramatic, but the message is clear: Friedman ties Hughes' next move directly to Guerin's willingness to act first.

If Hughes signs for three years, Minnesota gets a prime-window anchor without locking him into a forever deal.
That structure also protects Hughes. He gets stability now, keeps future earning power, and stays in a room that already pushed its chips in for him.
John Hynes benefits most on the bench. A committed Hughes lets him build the blue line around one elite puck-mover instead of managing uncertainty every night.
The Wild are down 2-0 to Colorado, so the timing is tense. But hard playoff minutes often reveal whether a player trusts the room.
Guerin has been Minnesota's general manager since August 21, 2019. Landing Hughes was aggressive. Extending him would define the whole build.
