Bill Guerin is on the verge of a high-profile contract extension

The move comes after Hynes guided the Wild to their first second-round playoff appearance in 11 years, marking their second consecutive postseason under his leadership.

The timing matters. Hynes has been Minnesota's head coach since the 2023-24 season, compiling a 125-78-24 record for a .604 win percentage in that span.

That kind of consistency is rare, and general manager Bill Guerin appears ready to reward it before Hynes enters a contract year.

Locking up Hynes is only one piece of a much bigger puzzle. Guerin is also working to extend defenseman Quinn Hughes, who has become the engine of Minnesota's blue line.

According to Russo and Smith, Hughes could sign a three-year deal with the Wild sometime between now and the end of next season.

Hughes has said he is open to re-signing, citing his trust in the team, staff, and management, and his belief he can win in Minnesota.

Layer in coaching staff questions, with reports suggesting changes could target the penalty kill unit after it struggled through multiple postseasons, and Guerin's summer starts to look like a juggling act.

Retaining a winning coach, locking down a franchise defenseman, and fixing special teams all at once is not a light workload for any front office.

If both extensions land, Minnesota positions itself for long-term stability at two of the most important jobs in the organization.

If either deal stalls, the pressure on Guerin only grows heading into next season.
