Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov left Thursday's loss to San Jose, and Paul Maurice says it's unrelated to last year's knee injuries. More news is due Friday.
Florida Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov is waiting on answers after leaving Thursday's game in San Jose with an apparent left leg injury, and head coach Paul Maurice says it's a separate issue from the right knee that cost him all of last season.
Barkov went down awkwardly during a board battle with Sharks defender Darnell Nurse and forward Zack Ostapchuk in the second period.
He got up, headed straight to the dressing room and never returned, and Florida went on to lose 4-3 in overtime.
Why this scare hits so hard
The timing stings. This was only Barkov's second game of the season after he missed the entire 2025-26 campaign following surgery on his right ACL and MCL, an injury he suffered early in training camp last September.
He even played for Finland at the 2026 World Championship in May, so his return looked like a real comeback story.
Maurice did not reveal a diagnosis or a timeline after the game.
He said the captain would be examined Friday and the team should have a clearer picture by the afternoon.
"He'll get looked at tomorrow. It's not related to his injury last year at all. We'll have a good idea by tomorrow afternoon."

As of now, nothing official has been shared on how long Barkov could be out.
What Florida could be facing
Barkov is 31 and has been the engine of this team since Florida drafted him second overall in 2013.
He owns 782 points in 806 regular season games, and his two-way play is nearly impossible to replace.
The Panthers already got a full season of life without him, and no one around the team wants a repeat.
For now it's a waiting game. The Panthers are in California for the next stop on their season-opening road trip, and we'll pass along any update on Barkov as soon as it's out.
