Jacob Markstrom will miss 10 to 14 days after taking a puck in Panthers practice, coach Paul Maurice said Tuesday. Akira Schmid steps in.
The Florida Panthers just lost their starting goalie for a stretch.
Jacob Markstrom will be out 10 to 14 days after getting hit by a puck during practice on Monday, head coach Paul Maurice announced Tuesday.
The team hasn't shared exactly what the injury is, only that it happened in that skate.
Florida recalled goaltender Cooper Black from AHL Charlotte on Tuesday to back up Akira Schmid while Markstrom is sidelined.
What this means for Florida
This is the second time in about a week that Markstrom has been dealing with something.
He sat out two games last week after leaving a loss in Buffalo following the first period.
Maurice said back then that it was not an injury, and Markstrom returned Saturday to pick up a win.
Markstrom's numbers so far
Through six games this season, Markstrom is 3-1-1 with one shutout, a 2.21 goals against average and an .897 save percentage.
The 36-year-old came over from the New Jersey Devils in a trade and was brought in to take over the starting job after Sergei Bobrovsky left for Toronto in free agency.
That leaves Schmid with most of the work for now.
He stepped in against Buffalo, then won 7-3 in Columbus last Tuesday.
Black was with the team for a few days earlier this month without appearing in a game, so this recall could finally get him some playing time.
If the timeline holds, Markstrom would return around the start of November.
Florida has already been hit hard by injuries early in the season, so this next stretch will put the team's goaltending depth to the test, with Schmid carrying the biggest load.
