NHL analyst E.J. Hradek names Philadelphia, Detroit and the Rangers as top McDavid destinations if he ever leaves the Oilers.
Connor McDavid isn't going anywhere yet, but that hasn't stopped the hockey world from wondering what happens if he ever does.
NHL Network analyst E.J. Hradek threw out three teams he believes would be in the mix if the Oilers captain ever tests the market, and the list is enough to make Edmonton fans a little uneasy.
Hradek's three landing spots
Speaking on the Bleed Oil Blue Podcast, Hradek named the Philadelphia Flyers, Detroit Red Wings and New York Rangers as the three most realistic destinations for McDavid should he ever decide his future lies outside Edmonton.
All three have been floated in hockey circles before, but hearing it from a national insider adds weight to the speculation.
Philadelphia has the cap space and a young core building around Matvei Michkov.
Detroit is still chasing its first playoff berth since 2017 and would love a generational talent to speed that up.
The Rangers offer the bright lights of Broadway and a roster that's always aiming to contend.
Winning is the real factor
According to Hradek, none of that matters as much as one thing, McDavid wants to win.
Whichever team can convince him they're closest to a Stanley Cup would have the inside track, regardless of market size or history.
For now, this remains speculation rather than anything close to a real transaction, but it's the kind of storyline that will follow McDavid for as long as his situation in Edmonton stays unresolved.
Oilers fans will hope it never becomes more than talk.
