Leon Draisaitl's quote raises more questions about Kris Knoblauch after firing

Leon Draisaitl is once again pointing at what went wrong under Kris Knoblauch, and this time he did not need to say a single new word to make headlines.

A social post from "TheMugNHL" resurfaced a quote Draisaitl gave after Mike Babcock's first practice as Edmonton's new head coach, and the framing hit differently the second time around.

Draisaitl said the team's everyday habits, the practices, the details, the little things, had slipped over the last couple of years.

He called Babcock's opening session a great start toward getting those things back.

It is not a wild accusation on its own.

Coaches change, tone changes, and players adjust to whoever is running the bench.

But stacked next to everything else Draisaitl and his teammates have said since Knoblauch was let go in May, the pattern is hard to miss.

This is the same core that reached back to back Stanley Cup Finals under Knoblauch, then flamed out early against Anaheim this spring.

Babcock has not coached an NHL game since 2023, and Edmonton brought him back knowing exactly what they were signing up for.

If his no nonsense approach is already resonating with Draisaitl after one practice, it puts real pressure on the idea that Knoblauch lost this group before the season even ended.

Preseason results have looked clean early, but nobody in Edmonton is measuring success in September.

The real test comes once games start counting, and every quote from this camp is going to be read through the lens of what changed and who gets credit for it.

Draisaitl and Connor McDavid still do not have a championship together.

Camp talk will only carry weight once the Oilers prove it on the ice.
