A major announcement involving the Winnipeg Jets just changed everything

Winnipeg Jets fans finally have the record book they always felt they deserved.

The NHL announced Thursday that the franchise's statistical history will now stretch across every era of the club, stitching together nearly five decades of hockey into one continuous story.

For years, the modern Jets carried a strange split identity.

Their official stats only dated back to 1999, the year the Atlanta Thrashers joined the league before relocating to Winnipeg in 2011, becoming the second incarnation of the Jets.

Meanwhile, the numbers from the original Jets, who played in Winnipeg from 1979 to 1996 before becoming the Coyotes, stayed tied to that now inactive Arizona franchise.

That gap is now closed. Deputy commissioner Bill Daly said the league is pleased that the full history of NHL hockey in Winnipeg can now be celebrated as one continuous story.

The change reshuffles the franchise leaderboard entirely.

Dale Hawerchuk now sits atop the goals list with 379, while Thomas Steen becomes the new leader in assists with 553, and Hawerchuk also claims the points crown with 929.

Mark Scheifele had briefly held the franchise records for goals and points, while ranking second in assists.

He now gets to chase down franchise legends instead of standing above them, giving this season a fresh storyline as the Jets build toward another playoff push.

For a fan base that watched its team relocate once and rebuild from scratch, this feels like more than paperwork.

It is a reunion of history many assumed was gone for good.
