NHL insider Greg Wyshynski was on the Jeff Marek show this morning where he brought up the possibility of Leon Draisaitl signing with the San Jose Sharks in free agency.

Draisaitl has been in a league of his own so far this year in the playoffs. He leads the league in playoff scoring with 20 points, including 9 goals, through nine games. The only player that comes close to Draisaitl is teammate Connor McDavid with 18 points.

Everyone with 20+ points this postseason:

 Leon Draisaitl

The ultimate playoff performer.

Of those 20 points, many have come on the powerplay, including 6 of his 9 goals so far. With 6 powerplay markers, he is already just one goal behind Mark Messier for the franchise record in power play goals in a single season.

Most powerplay goals in a postseason in Oil history:

7 Mark Messier
6 Leon Draisaitl (this season)

Bros played 9 games.

But could this by one of Draisaitl's last dances with the Oilers? NHL insider Greg Wyshynski thinks so. He proposed an interesting idea on the Jeff Marek show this morning, saying that Draisaitl could sign his next contract with the San Jose Sharks. Reportedly, there has been speculation about this possibility around the league for some time now.

SPECULATION: On today's The Jeff Marek Show, ESPN reporter Greg Wyshynski proposed a question to Jeff asking «Do you think [Leon] Draisaitl would go to San Jose because their owner is German?»

Jeff mentioned that there is an «opportunity» and that it has been SPECULATED on by the hockey industry for at least a year maybe longer.

It seems that this speculation largely stems from the fact that the Sharks owner, Hasso Platner, is German. With Leon Draisaitl being the biggest German star the NHL has ever seen, it would make sense that he would want him on the Sharks. While the team might not be very good at the moment, by the time Draisaitl hits free agency, the team could have a very exciting and promising young core as Wyshynski points out.

Greg listed off some reasons as to why maybe Draisaitl would consider: «Emerging market, great young players. They will obviously compensate him.

The Sharks will have 1st overall pick in the 2024 draft Macklin Celebrini joining the team within the next couple of years at the latest along with 4th overall pick in 2023 Will Smith. 2021 7th overall pick William Eklund completed his first proper year in the NHL this season, putting up 45 points in 80 games, good for second on the team. Adding Leon Draisaitl to that forward group could make the Sharks extremely dangerous overnight. It may be a pipe dream for Sharks fans, but it is one possible way the team could get out of this rebuild.
