Edmonton Oilers hit embarrassing low they haven't seen since 1979

While the Edmonton Oilers record of 10-10-5 is nowhere near the worst in the National Hockey League, given the expectations of this team, it's safe to say that they would be underwhelmed with their start through 25 games.

Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl have been fantastic, but beyond that, there are many question marks for this team that has gone to back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals, with their goaltending chief among them.

Over the years, and even the past two, the Oilers have struggled in net, but in 2025/26 they've taken it to a new level, reaching lows they haven't seen since they entered the NHL over 45 seasons ago.

According to Sportsnet Stats, the Oilers combined team save percentage of .860 is their worst since the 1979/80 season, their first season after entering the league, with Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard simply not having their best form this year.

Following this rough start, the Oilers have been linked to several goaltending upgrades, and while there's no guarantees that GM Stan Bowman will make a change, as of right now, it's clear this team is in desperate need of a fresh new face.

In the last month alone, the Oilers have given up 8 goals to Dallas, seven goals to Washington and nine goals to Colorado, showing that when things are bad, they are extraordinarily bad, and if they're to turn things around, something desperately needs to change.
