Edmonton Oilers dealt four injury blows ahead of training camp

Training camp is about a month away, and the Oilers are already going to be without four familiar faces when it opens.

Edmonton announced on Wednesday that forwards Mattias Janmark and Matt Savoie, defenceman Alec Regula and goaltender Frederik Andersen will not take part in next month's training camp.

It's a notable list considering all four are expected to play meaningful roles for this team once healthy.

According to the team, Janmark and Regula are still working their way back from medical procedures, with Janmark having gone under the knife last season and Regula shortly after Edmonton's season wrapped up.

Savoie and Andersen, meanwhile, are dealing with injuries that popped up during off season training sessions this summer.

The Oilers didn't attach specific timelines to any of the four players, only saying that updates on their availability will be provided when appropriate.

That's standard practice this time of year, but it does mean Edmonton fans will be watching closely as camp approaches to see who ends up ready for puck drop in September.

Losing Andersen for any stretch is worth monitoring given how much the crease situation shapes the rest of the roster, while Savoie's absence stings after the type of breakout season he was building toward.

Janmark and Regula both provide valuable, experienced depth up front and on the back end.

None of this is disastrous news in late August, but it does put a bit more pressure on Edmonton's depth chart right out of the gate.

If any of the four linger into the regular season, the Oilers could be forced to lean on younger players sooner than the organization would like.

For now, it's a wait and see situation, and the front office says more clarity will come as training camp gets closer and the roster picture becomes clearer.
